Golden point heartbreak at Telstra – 2006
After being docked four competition points at the start of the season for salary cap breaches, the Warriors were up against it for most of season 2006.
But in Round 18 they travelled to Telstra Stadium in Sydney to face the high-flying Bulldogs and came within a whisker of stealing a result.
The Kiwi side led 18-12 at half-time, inspired by an excellent opening 40 from winger Manu Vatuvei, who assisted the first two tries of the match before scoring one himself.
Centre Tony Martin had also been accurate off the boot for the visitors.
Australia and Queensland centre Willie Tonga hit back for the Dogs in the second stanza, and after Hazem El Masri converted scores were locked at 18-18.
Canterbury could have won the match in regulation time, but standoff Daniel Holdsworth missed not one, not two, but three field goal attempts in the final minutes to let the game go to golden point.
Three minutes into added time the Warriors raced up hard to close down a Ben Roberts field goal, only for the young Kiwi to offload to Mark O’Meley for the game-winning try.
A harsh end to a thrilling game, check out the team lists below and watch it again here.
