A Krystal Rota try with five minutes left in the game has handed the Maori Ferns an 8-4 victory over the Indigenous Women on Friday night.

In a game where defensive plays delivered the majority of the highlights, the Maori ladies scored in the first and fourth quarter to seal victory at Melbourne’s AAMI Park.

Tyler Birch opened the scoring, with a try in the left-hand corner, giving the the Maori a 4-0 lead, which they would hold through until half-time.

After struggling against a lopsided possession count in the first half, the Indigenous side raced out of the gates in the second, scoring on the very first possession via Shakiah Tungai.

With the conversion pinging off the post, scores remained locked at 4-4.

With five minutes to play, a darting run from co-captain Rota saw her power over the line, securing the win for Rusty Matua’s side.
