After 109 years of existence the Newtown Jets don’t have too many club firsts these days, but over the weekend two Kiwi brothers created history for the Australian club.
Malakai and Saulala Houma, who hail from Auckland where they both played for the Mt Albert Lions, became the first brothers to pack down in the front row at the same time for the Jets’ first-grade side.
The pair both started for Newtown in an eventual 16-12 loss to Wyong on Saturday in the Intrust Super Premiership [NSW Cup], making history in the process.
While the benchmark is more quirky than significant, it’s certainly newsworthy given Newtown’s rich history.
Newtown RLFC were a foundation club of the NSWRFL in 1908 and now serve as a feeder team to the Cronulla Sharks.
